Plot summary: Constantine has written a play, the principal part to be acted by Nina on the occasion of his mother's vacation. The mother, Irina, is a famous actress of the old school. With her is her lover, Trigorin, a successful writer, with whom Nina becomes infatuated. Constantine realizes that Nina is slipping away from him and attempts suicide. His mother first nurses him back to health and then leaves, infuriated at her son's "foolishness." Nina follows her and Trigorin to the city.
